The Handbook presents a most updated and comprehensive exploration of social movement research. It not only maps, but also expands the field of social movement studies, taking stock of recent developments in cognate areas of studies, within and beyond sociology and political science. While structured around traditional social movement concepts, each section combines the mapping of the state of the art with attempts to broaden our knowledge of social movements beyond classic theoretical agendas, and to identify the contribution that social movement studies can give to other fields of knowledge. The Handbook starts by presenting some of the main core theoretical perspectives in the field. A section exploring some of the major social transformations that have recently affected social movements is then followed by one devoted to the analysis of micro dynamics of collective action.

A social movement is a loosely organized effort by a large group of people to achieve a particular goal, typically a social or political one. It is a type of group action and may involve individuals , organizations or both. Definitions of the term are slightly varied. Political science and sociology have developed a variety of theories and empirical research on social movements. For example, some research in political science highlights the relation between popular movements and the formation of new political parties [5] as well as discussing the function of social movements in relation to agenda setting and influence on politics. Some scholars have argued that modern Western social movements became possible through education the wider dissemination of literature and increased mobility of labor due to the industrialization and urbanization of 19th-century societies. Many of the social movements of the last hundred years grew up, like the Mau Mau in Kenya, to oppose Western colonialism.

Contentious Politics in the Middle East pp Cite as. This chapter aims to providea theoretical perspective to the fluctuating levels of intensive collective action during contentious social movements. While in some cases there is a gradual decline of protests, in others there is fluctuation and a re-kindling of the protests. This chapter seeks to understand why the Gezi Park protests in Turkey prolonged. The main argument we put forth deals with the temporal dimension of social movements. Specifically, it problematizes the sequential variance of intensity and patterns of escalation and moderation within a social movement. Unable to display preview.

Are religious ideological antecedents factors in the emergence of African American social protest? If so, how do these factors translate African American discontent into political action? Rather than proceed from standard renditions of social movement analysis that argue structural opportunities motivate people to act, this paper contends that culture motivates many people to become and remain involved in collective action. The civil rights movement in Arkansas is examined to explain how religious ideas enable movements to emerge and endure in the face of tremendous opposition and uncertain prospects for movement success. Findings suggest that in the context of oppression ideas can help motivate, guide, and give meaning to protest.

The problematic character of the contentious politics frame is discussed and illustrated both empirically and conceptually, and a more inclusive and elastic conceptualization is proposed and elaborated, one that conceives of movements broadly as collective challenges to systems of authority. This alternative conceptualization includes collective challenges within and to institutional, organizational, and cultural domains other than just the state or the polity. Snow, D. Social movement

Unlike political or economic institutions, social movements have an elusive power, but one that is no less real. This study surveys the history of the social movement, puts forward a theory of collective action to explain its surges and declines, and offers an interpretation of the power of movement that emphasizes its effects on personal lives, policy reforms and political culture. This second edition has an entirely new chapter, major additions to the bibliography, new illustrative materials in many of the chapters and a new conclusion. Also available in libraries worldwide.

- Dejame entrar!

Don't rely on these old notes in lieu of reading the literature, but they can jog your memory.
