Accordingly, the detailed analysis of this system is essential for both design purposes and the detailed assessment of machine performance. Due to the large number of possible power transmission system components and the nature of these systems, general power transmission system analysis methods have been difficult to develop. However, such analysis methods could meet a wide variety of needs for system design.

Over the last 15 years, there has been significant growth in the number of transmission types as well as their complexity: manual, conventional automatic, dual clutch, automated manual, continuously variable, split power and pure EV transmissions. Alongside this, most manufacturers are now simultaneously developing conventional, hybrid and allelectric vehicles, with each type requiring different driveline architectures. A continuous drive to deliver optimal efficiency alongside reduced weight and cost also means that newer powertrains feature much closer integration of the gearbox, prime mover and energy recovery systems and rely on sophisticated control systems to ensure optimum performance and efficiency at all times. This shift in technical complexity has occurred against a backdrop of increased competition and demands for great efficiency, as well as a need to comply with changing legislative and industry standards. More than ever, vehicle manufacturers must innovate and bring to market powertrains that are comparatively unproven. For the engineering teams tasked with developing these new powertrains, resources are being pushed harder than ever, and development processes are now very much under scrutiny.

A transmission is a machine in a power transmission system, which provides controlled application of power. Often the term 5-speed transmission refers simply to the gearbox , that uses gears and gear trains to provide speed and torque conversions from a rotating power source to another device. In British English , the term transmission refers to the whole drivetrain , including clutch , gearbox, prop shaft for rear-wheel drive , differential , and final drive shafts. In American English, however, the term refers more specifically to the gearbox alone, and detailed usage differs. The most common use is in motor vehicles , where the transmission adapts the output of the internal combustion engine to the drive wheels. Such engines need to operate at a relatively high rotational speed , which is inappropriate for starting, stopping, and slower travel.

In recent years, electronic controlled on-demand four-wheel drive vehicles are in practical use widely. The amount of power transmitted to the rear wheels is adjusted by controlling the engaging force of the transfer clutch. By this, the distribution of power between the front wheels and the rear wheels is changed to achieve behaviors of the vehicle suitable for its driving state, such as ease of turning at an early stage of steering, restriction of slip in rapid acceleration, and stability in deceleration. However, since the power transmission system disclosed in the above patent publication can adjust only the distribution of power between the front wheels and the rear wheels, there is a limit in controlling the turning characteristics of the vehicle, specifically in controlling the understeer and oversteer of the vehicle.
