It improves availability of feed throughout the year in both quantity and quality by treating locally available feed resources with biotechnology by product feed additives , improving rumen fermentation of fibrous feed crop residues and enhancing the nutritive value, utilization of agro-industrial by-products and other forages. Biotechnology applications improve the performance of animal and animal by product through consumption of improved nutrition. Biotechnology will play an essential role in the economic future of developing countries in maintaining the globally attractive or desirable plant or seed that are adapted to the desired agro ecology by using recombinant DNA technology. The constraints of biotechnology in animal production in developing countries are due to poverty, malnutrition, disease, increasing of field crop production, poor livestock production systems, poor hygiene and unemployment.

Biotechnological tools to maximize production efficiency and animal health and to reducing nutrient excretion support the strive towards these goals. The use of enzymes increases nutrition utilization and thus can broaden the range of feed ingredients that can efficiently be used in nutrition. Probiotics and yeast products have been shown to stabilize the gut ecosystem and to optimizing intestinal function and health. Yeast products have also been shown to support immune function. Organic minerals being in a form of high bioavailability offer an effective strategy for improving the efficiency of feeding trace minerals and for reducing environmental burden. In the future, algae could play a major role as novel protein sources, as a tool to provide long chain essential fatty acids or other nutrients in highly available forms into the feed and food chain. The Application of Biotechnology on Livestock Feed Improvement

Abstract: Application of recent advancements of biotechnology in recent years allowed the use of non-toxic fungi to improve fibrous feeds like straw or poor quality roughages. In particular, the white rot fungi have been used because of their ability to digest in to usable product of the plant material. In addition, wide variety of feed additives, many of biotechnological origin are known to modify rumen fermentation in ruminant animals. They include components that can reduce methanogenesis, enhance propionic acid production, reduce protein degradation, improve microbial protein synthesis and inhibit protozoa. Among such additives are antibiotics, probiotics and specific substrates like pre-biotics. Moreover, due to advances in biotechnology, more effective enzyme preparations can now be produced in large quantities and relatively inexpensively. Therefore, supplementation of the diet as a means of improving nutritive value is becoming routine.
