A data-flow diagram is a way of representing a flow of data through a process or a system usually an information system.

This text is derived from the Data Flow diagram entry in the online Wikipedia. A Data Flow diagram can also be used for the visualization of data processing structured design. It is common practice for a designer to draw a context-level DFD first which shows the interaction between the system and outside entities. This context-level DFD is then 'exploded' to show more detail of the system being modeled.

Software analysis and design includes all activities, which help the transformation of requirement specification into implementation. Requirement specifications specify all functional and non-functional expectations from the software. These requirement specifications come in the shape of human readable and understandable documents, to which a computer has nothing to do. Software analysis and design is the intermediate stage, which helps human-readable requirements to be transformed into actual code. Data flow diagram is graphical representation of flow of data in an information system. It is capable of depicting incoming data flow, outgoing data flow and stored data.

What is a Context Diagram and what are the benefits of creating one?

Data flow diagrams are categorized as either logical or physical. A logical data flow diagram focuses on the business and how the business operates. It is not concerned with how the system will be constructed. Instead, it describes the business events that take place and the data required and produced by each event. Conversely, a physical data flow diagram shows how the system will be implemented, including the hardware, software, files, and people involved in the system.

and entity-relationship diagrams, which are described in Chapter 9 (Data Design). DATA FLOW DIAGRAMS. In Part A of the Systems Analyst's Toolkit, you learn.

A data flow diagram DFD illustrates how data is processed by a system in terms of inputs and outputs. As its name indicates its focus is on the flow of information, where data comes from, where it goes and how it gets stored. Data flow diagrams became popular in the s in software development. SmartDraw contains all the needed data flow diagram symbols and easy-to-use templates that help you get started. Stamp shapes to your drawing area and connect them easily with keyboard shortcuts or intuitive commands located on the SmartPanel to the left of your drawing area.

The Context Diagram shows the system under consideration as a single high-level process and then shows the relationship that the system has with other external entities systems, organizational groups, external data stores, etc. A DFD is process centric and depicts 4 main components. Each DFD may show a number of processes with data flowing into and out of each process. If there is a need to show more detail within a particular process, the process is decomposed into a number of smaller processes in a lower level DFD. Context Diagrams and Data-Flow Diagrams were created for systems analysis and design.
