George Lawson, Happy anniversary? Forty years after its publication, Theda Skocpol's States and social revolutions remains the pre-eminent book in the study of revolutions. But how should the book be assessed from the vantage point of contemporary world politics? This essay reviews Skocpol's contribution to three main issue-areas: theory, structural approaches and the international. It argues that, rich as it has been, the research agenda initiated by States and social revolutions has run its course. It cannot respond effectively to the different contexts within which revolutions emerge and the diverse forms they take. Its bifurcation between structure and agency cannot capture the relational character of revolutionary action.

Instead of focusing on deterministic origins, Stone delves into the complex political processes that sparked and sustained each revolution. Within his loose framework, Stone largely sublimates his own voice to that of the many historians whose work he discusses. The work does not directly address the glaring differences in state structure and culture that separate Commonwealth England and Revolutionary France throughout their year divide, nor the often-fundamental differences throughout the years between France and Revolutionary Russia. Significantly, his stages of progression cannot be easily applied to China or Cuba, much less the largely nonviolent Velvet Revolutions of —which largely avoided terror despite being the outgrowth of an even more brutal European empire—or the complex and divergent outcomes of the Arab Spring risings. Theda Skocpol observed that social revolutions have been rare but momentous occurrences in modern world history; from France in the s to Vietnam in midth century. Fifty years ago, nonmarital cohabitation was rare. In late 20th century, social revolution affected the relationship between men and women cohabiting, without the need of formal marriage; and between each individual gender too, resulting in the LGBT reforms. This kind of social revolution is more common today, in the 21st century, than some rare occurrences in the yesteryears. The cause of social revolution does not confine itself to political unrest, religious uprising, economic problem, human sexual preferences, but it is wide ranged even to cyber space innovations which have been revolutionary and have brought about changes to the society and the legal system at large.
