Human Rights and Development
Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination. One of the great achievements of the United Nations is the creation of a comprehensive body of human rights law—a universal and internationally protected code to which all nations can subscribe and all people aspire. The United Nations has defined a broad range of internationally accepted rights, including civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. It has also established mechanisms to promote and protect these rights and to assist states in carrying out their responsibilities.
Human rights are like armour: they protect you; they are like rules, because they tell you how you can behave; and they are like judges, because you can appeal to them. They are abstract — like emotions; and like emotions, they belong to everyone and they exist no matter what happens. They are like nature because they can be violated; and like the spirit because they cannot be destroyed. Like time, they treat us all in the same way — rich and poor, old and young, white and black, tall and short. They offer us respect, and they charge us to treat others with respect. Like goodness, truth and justice, we may sometimes disagree about their definition, but we recognise them when we see them.
Historical Development of Human Rights
This paper seeks to analyse the concept and approaches of human rights and its development even before the Greek times Historical Development Of Human Rights. The history of human rights covers thousands of years and draws upon religious, cultural, philosophical and legal developments throughout the recorded history. It seems that the concept of human rights is as old as the civilization. This is evident from the fact that almost at all stages of mankind there have been a human rights documents in one form or the other in existence.
Human rights encompass civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. They include everyone having a right to health, sexual and reproductive health and rights SRHR , education and safe drinking water and sanitation. These rights have been formally and universally recognised by all countries from the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and reaffirmed through multiple treaties and declarations since. International human rights law sets out the obligation of states to respect and fulfil human rights for all. The international human rights framework can provide guidance on incorporating human rights into policy and practice. Human rights for human development rely on mutual accountability, whereby all actors, including citizens, communities, organisations and the government, are responsible for respecting and fulfilling mutually agreed human rights obligations.
What Are Human Rights? Its roots, however, lie in earlier tradition and documents of many cultures; it took the catalyst of World War II to propel human rights onto the global stage and into the global conscience. Most societies have had traditions similar to the "golden rule" of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In addition, the Inca and Aztec codes of conduct and justice and an Iroquois Constitution were Native American sources that existed well before the 18th century. In fact, all societies, whether in oral or written tradition, have had systems of propriety and justice as well as ways of tending to the health and welfare of their members. Yet many of these documents, when originally translated into policy, excluded women, people of color, and members of certain social, religious, economic, and political groups.
Human rights and development
We will not enjoy development without security, we will not enjoy security without development, and we will not enjoy either without respect for human rights. When the interrelationship between human rights and development co-operation was established in the s, the linkage between the two concepts was often connected with debates about the discontinuation of assistance to a country whose government grossly violated human rights and the punitive aspect of the linkage appeared to prevail in public opinion. In the course of the s, the relationship between human rights and development co-operation began to take on a different form.
The purpose of this article is to reopen the debate on some conceptual issues of human rights, for the purpose of relaunching and revitalizing a politically mobilizing agenda for Latin America. The author defends the priority of civil and political rights over economic and social rights by reformulating, for example, the right to education, which has traditionally been understood to be part of economic and social rights. He also contends that it is both urgent and necessary to address through political action, and not within the domain of human rights, issues that raise controversies of a moral character in society. The case of abortion, which is still treated as a human rights issue in the United States, is sufficiently illustrative. Human rights language exists to remind us that there are some abuses that are genuinely intolerable, and some excuses for these abuses that are genuinely unbearable.
Global human rights and development GHRAD Human rights and development aims converge in many instances and are beneficial only to the government and not the people although there can be conflict between their different approaches. Today, [ when? Historically, the "minority clauses" guaranteeing civil and political rights and religious and cultural toleration to minorities were significant acts emerging from the peace process of World War I relating to a peoples rights to self-determination. Overseen by the League of Nations Council the process allowed petitions from individuals and was monitored under the jurisdiction of the Permanent Court of International Justice. The 'clauses' are an important early signpost in both the human rights and development histories.
“The right to development is an inalienable human right by virtue of which every human person and all peoples are entitled to participate in, contribute to, and enjoy economic, social, cultural and political development, in which all human rights and fundamental freedoms can be fully realized.”.
