Population, development, and climate change: links and effects on human health

Today, it is globally recognized that fulfilling the rights of women and girls is central to development. But if one were to trace the origins of this realization, many threads would lead back to Cairo in A quarter of a century later, the world has seen remarkable progress. There has been a 25 per cent increase in global contraceptive prevalence rate around the world. Adolescent births have declined steeply, and the global maternal mortality ratio has fallen.

But progress has been slow and uneven. Hundreds of millions of women around the world are still not using modern contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancies, and global targets on reducing maternal deaths have not been met. There, they made some 1, clear, concrete commitments to advance the goals of the ICPD and secure the rights and dignity of all. The ICPD Programme of Action , adopted in by Member States, lays out a far-sighted plan for advancing human well-being that places the human rights of individuals, rather than numerical population targets, at the centre of the global development agenda.

It emphasizes the value of investing in women and girls, both as an end in itself and as a key to improving the quality of life for everyone. It calls for an end to gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices, including female genital mutilation.

Further, the Programme of Action highlights the crucial links between sexual and reproductive health and rights with almost every aspect of population and development, from urbanization, migration and ageing to changing family structures and the importance of addressing the rights of young people. It calls attention to the ways in which investing in women and youth, especially in their sexual and reproductive health, can impact environmental sustainability and population dynamics.

Initially considered to have a year time horizon, the Programme of Action was extended beyond by the General Assembly. In , world leaders unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals , a historic set of goals to eliminate poverty, achieve gender equality, and secure the health and well-being of all people. The 17 global goals, also called Agenda , call for collective effort across a wide range of areas — including environmental action, public health, human rights, education, and much more — to usher in a new era of development around the world.

The Nairobi Summit on ICPD25, taking place in November, will seek additional commitments from governments, organizations, advocates and others, to accelerate efforts to realize the goals of the Programme of Action at last. Shortly after SARS-CoV emerged at the turn of the 21st century, the spike S protein particularly in its prefusion [native] conformation was identified as the immunodominant antigen of the virus. The characteristics of this response would include production of neutralizing antibodies, generation of a T-cell response, and avoidance of immune-enhanced disease vaccine-induced response that led to paradoxically increased disease severity on viral challenge. The SARS-CoV-2 vaccines currently authorized for use, and others that have late-stage clinical data available, are summarized in the Table. One approach for vaccine development is creation of inactivated vaccines derived from virus grown in culture and then chemically inactivated, which may deliver stably expressed, conformationally native antigenic epitopes. Sinopharm and Sinovac are among the manufacturers farthest along in development of this type of vaccine, which have been evaluated by phase 3 trials that have attained international authorizations for use. Another approach to vaccine development is delivery of the S protein as a recombinant protein subunit within one of several cell-based systems that support protein expression. This approach can protect immunized animals in vivo but has the theoretic risk of generating a polarized T H 2 over T H 1 immune response that can be overcome, depending on the adjuvant used.

Human Development Index (HDI)

Trends in the latter half of the twentieth century seemed to provide ample support for both predictions. However, recent signs of change in family behavior raise doubts about their continued validity. In a number of countries we see a halt to, and even reversal of, fertility decline and of couple instability. In parallel, we observe a reversal of the social gradient on both dimensions. Applying a multiple equilibrium framework, we propose a theoretical framework that helps explain both the phase of marital and fertility decline and the subsequent recovery. We focus especially on the endogenous dynamics of the process, which, we argue, depend on the conditions that favor rapid diffusion. Our core argument is that the turnaround is driven by the diffusion of gender-egalitarian norms.
