The basic theory at work is that the bonds between different elements absorb light at different frequencies. The light is measured using an infrared spectrometer which produces the output of an infrared spectrum. The IR spectrum is a graph of infrared light absorbance by the substance on the vertical axis and the frequency wavelength on the horizontal axis. FTIR analysis measures the range of wavelengths in the infrared region that are absorbed by a material. This is accomplished through the application of infrared radiation IR to samples of a material. Unknown materials are identified by searching the spectrum against a database of reference spectra.

An FTIR spectrometer simultaneously collects high-resolution spectral data over a wide spectral range. This confers a significant advantage over a dispersive spectrometer, which measures intensity over a narrow range of wavelengths at a time. The term Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy originates from the fact that a Fourier transform a mathematical process is required to convert the raw data into the actual spectrum. The most straightforward way to do this, the "dispersive spectroscopy" technique, is to shine a monochromatic light beam at a sample, measure how much of the light is absorbed, and repeat for each different wavelength.

This absorption is characteristic of the nature of the chemical bonds present in a sample. With a spectrometer, this absorption is measured as a function of wavelength as wave numbers, typically from - cm The result is an IR spectrum that serves as a characteristic "molecular fingerprint" whichcan be used to identify organic and inorganic samples.
