This chapter considers the knowledge and competencies needed by adults to more seamlessly support the health, learning, development, and school success of children from birth through age 8 by providing consistent, high-quality care and education. For its articulation of these competencies, the committee draws on the science of child development and early learning, the knowledge base about educational practices, and the landscape of care and education and related sectors. The chapter first summarizes foundational knowledge, skills, and abilities, or competencies, needed by adults who have professional responsibilities for young children. This is followed by a discussion of specialized competencies needed for quality practice for the care and education workforce, including the extent to which current statements of professional standards encompass these competencies.

Fassihi, Mohammad Reza. Professional training in the oil and gas industry has traditionally focused on course requirements without emphasizing the role of competency. This, in turn, has caused an inflation of courses due to subject overlaps whilst wasting the students' time whose skills were not considered before taking the course.
