These components will have a different function. Base on their type of functions there must be the type of fits between the two mating components should be determined. How actually can a fit be obtained between the two mating components? To determine the fit, we must take one component as the constant member and the second component will have the deviations according to the type of fit chosen. By making a constant member we can classify them as hole basis system and shaft basis system.

Engineering fits are generally used as part of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing when a part or assembly is designed. In engineering terms, the "fit" is the clearance between two mating parts, and the size of this clearance determines whether the parts can, at one end of the spectrum, move or rotate independently from each other or, at the other end, are temporarily or permanently joined together. Engineering fits are generally described as a "shaft and hole" pairing, but are not necessarily limited to just round components. Within each category are several codes to define the size limits of the hole or shaft - the combination of which determines the type of fit. A fit is usually selected at the design stage according to whether the mating parts need to be accurately located, free to slide or rotate, separated easily, or resist separation. Cost is also a major factor in selecting a fit, as more accurate fits will be more expensive to produce, and tighter fits will be more expensive to assemble.

In this article, we are going to discuss different types of Fits in a detailed way. In this article, I will be defining all these parameters with respect to the hole and shaft assembly. Each Fit in this article is represented by a condition that needs to be satisfied and extreme cases are shown with respect to the assembly. The dimensions of the hole and shaft are such that always clearance or gap is existing between hole and shaft called Clearance fit. At moderate speeds, the running fit is employed in engineering for rotation of components. The clearance provides the required space for couplings. As the name implies, Loose Running fits have the largest clearance and employed for rotation at high speeds of the components.

In the hole basis system , the size of hole is taken as a basic hole. Mostly, the hole basis system is used because standard tools such as drills and reamers are used for producing the hole whose size is generally not adjustable. In the shaft basis system , the shaft size and limits are maintained constant and the limits of the hole are varied to obtain the fit.
