Street Published on by Cambridge University Press. This book challenges conventional theories about literacy, and the practices which often arise from them. It attempts to provide a new perspective through which the variety of literacy practices across different cultures can be viewed and from which the practical issues that arise in specific literacy campaigns and programmes can be approached. Dr Street first examines the explicit theories developed about literacy within different academic disciplines, on the premise that these underlie statements about literacy within development campaigns and in everyday usage. He analyses in detail arguments about the 'technical' and 'neutral' nature of literacy and its supposed 'cognitive' consequences in the work of some psychologists, linguists and social anthropologists.

The Future of Literacy Studies pp Cite as. It is now some twenty-five years since Literacy Studies took a new direction, turning away from questions of pedagogy and the psycholin-guistic processes of the individual reader—writer and looking outside the classroom to study literacy in its social context. Both studies memorably shifted the focus of literacy research onto domains and contexts beyond the classroom. Second generation works such as Barton and Hamilton , Besnier , Kulick and Stroud , Prinsloo and Breier developed these approaches in a series of significant empirical studies. In this book we ask what the future of Literacy Studies is, inviting a number of scholars actively involved in shaping the field of Literacy Studies both to take stock of the current state of activity and to point to future directions for literacy research.
